Avalon Two-Tone Sun Moon 24 Hour Mechanical Pocket Watch with Built In Display Stand # 8430TX Review
Just A Few Words On This Watch...
Due to a recent rule change on my Day Job As we are not allowed to carry cell phones now on the floor so I decided to buy this watch.
So far the watch works well and keeps very accurate time for a mechanical watch as most of these tend to run either a bit fast or a bit slow etc.
Now my watch so far tends to run slow or say it loses about half a minute every 2 days which is very good for a mechanical watch and certainly better than the Timex or Benrus watches we wore back in high school back in the 60s.
For me personally I don't regard it as an issue as I always have the habit of setting my watches ahead a minute or two anyhow to make sure I arrive at my appointments or at the Bus Stop just a bit early rather than late which may possibly work well for you also?.
In fact this watch is almost perfect for my needs as it isn't delicate like a gents watch nor is it unduly heavy tho it does have some heft to it.
Still its important to remember like any watch it is a precision instrument so it does have to be treated with some care.
I bought it in particular as I couldn't see spending say 80 to 150 dollars for a time piece with a plastic crystal and I regard that both as a cheapness and a laziness on the part of the manufacturer.
(But the Crystal on "THIS WATCH" is Mineral Glass or the 'Real Mc Coy!).
Still it was shipped promptly so I must give Kudos both to Amazon and to the Seller...
I regard the chain with belt clip as very substantial and a good chain is a vital necessity for anyone wearing a pocket watch as watch fobs are not of much value any more as most pants made nowadays no longer have watch pockets built in and that's a pity?.
I gave the watch a 4 star rating as I'm not completely sure how the time issue will work out as I've found from earlier experiences with spring driven and wind up watches that it takes about a month for the watches to loosen up a bit and give you their most accurate time as after all just like a car engine it's important to remember that any new mechanical object is going to be tight and you do have to allow a little time for them to 'work in' or limber up so to speak...
The two most important things to remember with these watches are for the very first day just leave the watch sitting at home and let it just run for a day or two both to see that it runs ok and also so you can check the time to see if your watch runs a bit fast or possibly a bit slow.
Secondly you must remember 'DONT OVERWIND!" and believe me it's really easy to over do this.
The instructions on my watch says just wind until you feel 'resistance' and I quite agree with this....
Now my particulate watch is fully wound at about 11 and a half turns tho I wind it once a day and always at the same time just 10 turns and so far my watch runs excellent tho yours may be different but seriously I do recommend you go easy on the winding as i did until you see how 'Your Watch' runs, Like maybe 7 or 8 turns just to see how it goes for a day or two and then perhaps gradually increase until you feel tension and then if your smart you Back Off!...
As I'd say the best amount of turns to wind the watch is the 'LEAST' amount of turns needed to run the watch reliably thru a 24hr period as there is NO need to always wind it to the maximum as any machine can easily be over stressed and you will save money as you wont have to run to the watch repairer with a froze or a jammed watch as I once had to do with a Timex wrist watch.
I personally think the Avalon watch is an excellent buy and I'm only sorry the maker doesn't do one of these as a railroad watch as I'd buy it at once.
For me I really like the sturdy build of the watch and the fact that the flip out bar on back works really well letting me use this watch as a desk accessory as I write Novels part time and it's a big help to me in that role and I've already received some nice compliments on this watch as its "quite handsome" to look at...
Just buy one and watch how you wind it and you wont be sorry for its really a nice time piece,
